Crude Oil Flexibility/Managing Variable Quality

With the expansion of unconventional production and increased blending of crude oils, the variety of crude oils available to refiners today is broader than it has ever been. One key to operating with lower costs is to maintain the flexibility to process a wide assortment of crude oils and blends at your refinery—taking advantage of the supply market to enable a reduction in the cost of crude oil supply. However, lower-cost crudes and blend variations can have negative impacts on operating performance and introduce operating challenges.

Veolia has several technologies specific to measuring the quality of crude oils, blends, and operating conditions that can be impacted by variable quality like system fouling and corrosion—improving the ability to assess system health and determine when corrective actions are needed. Combining this information with time-tested, proven programs to maintain and improve performance helps our customers achieve an optimum balance between performance and cost while ensuring production and product quality goals are met.

The exact issues that arise depend upon the exact crude oil blend and refinery configuration, but common issues are seen across refineries looking to increase crude flexibility include desalter performance issues, increased fouling, wastewater quality degradation, catalyst poisoning, and decreased equipment life from corrosion. If left unchecked, the negative impacts of crude quality variation can consume much to all the profit opportunities gained by purchasing cheaper crude oils. Combining technology, chemistry, and industry know-how, Veolia works with you to develop the right program for your specific challenges, improving flexibility and increasing profit.

Mechanical Availability (Uptime/Equipment Life)

Fluctuating oil prices, energy conservation demands, and tightening regulations in recent years have forced a squeeze on operational costs at the same time the industry is seeking more efficient operations and longer continuous runs between planned maintenance. The obvious benefit of maximizing uptime is that keeping equipment running preserves production and profit generation. While the budget spent on maintenance is always a trade-off between reliability and cost, high performers can achieve reliability at low cost, while low performers spend a lot for maintenance but still are faced with lower reliability.

Veolia uses an integrated, holistic approach to helping refiners maximize uptime and preserve equipment life and performance across their operations. Our teams drive to the root cause of the problem to ensure that we solve challenges in the most cost-effective manner possible. As Veolia's capabilities span across the entire refinery operations and offsite—including chemistry, equipment, performance management, and technical expertise— we are positioned to ensure safe and reliable performance for the individual components, the refinery, and across your entire fleet of refineries.

Although planned maintenance has a cost impact as machinery sits idle, there is an accompanying long-term benefit of keeping everything functioning to its optimum over the long-haul. Applications

Refining applications

Crude Tank/Feed Logistics

Crude tanks are the first line of defense for the refiner to reduce the impact of feedstock contaminants and blend quality issues. Refiners looking to improve energy efficiency, desalter performance, and corrosion want to maximize sludge and water removal while maintaining compatible blends in their crude storage and feed tanks—a complex challenge.

Generally, crude oil receipts that have high basic sediment and water or are of inconsistent quality (like many water-born shipments) can benefit from additional dehydration in the tank.  Tankage pretreatment, where specific demulsifier chemistry is added to the crude as it is received is recommended in these cases.

Blending practices and logistics can help ensure compatibility to reduce desalter treatment rates and the frequency of desalter upsets, as well as reduce fouling potential.  When logistics are insufficient to guarantee compatibility of the various crude oils processed, crude stabilizers fed to the crudes upon receipt can be used to reduce the impacts of incompatible blend scenarios. Veolia has also developed expert services to measure blend qualities and predict when quality issues will impact operations - in time to act to prevent problems.

  • Crude Quality Measurement provides on-the-spot testing and impact quantification—coupled with recommended mitigation—allowing your refinery to safely expand their operating envelope.

  • Blending Optimization uses Veolia's proprietary crude oil quality measurements to determine the ideal blend to minimize processing issues while maintaining crude oil purchasing flexibility.

  • Tank Pretreatment improves dehydration and contaminant removal, improving performance and delaying the need for capital upgrades.

  • Crude Oil Stabilization restores the ability of an incompatible blend to avoid asphaltene precipitation, avoiding process-related problems when processing a variable crude slate.

  • Tank Farm & Logistics Assessment provides a cold-eyes review of the tank farm to improve the efficiency of operations, identify gaps, and determine best practice for blending and treatment

  • Slop/Recovered Oil Management programs are targeted to ensure the quality of the recovered oil to avoid upsets to the operation when returned. A combination of chemistry, equipment, auditing, and expertise results in higher quality recovered oil to be reused in the refiner processes.

Crude & Vacuum Units

The crude and vacuum distillation units are the first process unit that most of the fresh feed to a refinery sees.  These units remove the contaminant and separate the crude oil into usable fractions, preparing the oil for further processing to produce the finished products for sale by the refinery.

Veolia specializes in ensuring the stable and efficient operation of these units—delivering operational calm in the face of variability.

Successful refiners understand that efficient crude and vacuum unit performance are key to good downstream operations and need to address the main challenges of feed quality variation, hydrocarbon losses to the desalter brine, quality compromises, energy costs, and reliability concerns.

  • Cold & Hot Exchanger Train and Heater Fouling Control programs and monitoring have kept pace to preserve heat transfer and throughput for both traditional and non-conventional fouling.

  • Desalter Treatment helps refiners go beyond dehydration to improve extraction of contaminants not normally removed effectively at the desalter (including metal and tramp amine removal) while maintaining excellent brine quality.

  • Atmospheric & Vacuum Tower Overhead Corrosion Control protects from both acid attack and manages salt-induced corrosion.  When salting cannot be avoided, our unique salt dispersants can help maintain a clean tower top.

  • High-Temperature Corrosion Control combines engineering analysis of corrosion ‘hot spots’ to identify the best monitoring points and ensure the right chemistry is used in the right locations, and not used where not needed.

  • Desalter Equipment provides refiners with a desalter technical assessment, upgrade/retrofit existing desalter vessels, or provide turnkey design and build new desalting equipment when moving to different crude slates or expanding throughput.

Catalytic & Thermal Conversion Units

Various thermal and catalytic processes are used to improve product quality, increase yields of the most valuable liquid products, and upgrade bottom-of-the-barrel streams. The intense pressures, high temperatures, and complex chemistries involved can stress both the hydrocarbon streams and the equipment used in these processes.

Veolia’s programs and technology address the potential pitfalls in these valuable units to ensure smooth operation, increase valuable product yield, and preserve equipment life. The main applications Veolia supports in the crude and vacuum unit include:

  • Delayed Coker Foam Control combines several defoamer formulations with the expertise to feed and control the defoamer to ensure good control while minimizing silicone carryover impact in downstream units.

  • Main Fractionator Overhead Corrosion & Salting programs are designed specifically to address the high water content, pH, and ammonia salt potential seen in these systems.

  • Metals Passivation treats the circulating catalyst stream with proprietary nano-sized metal passivation to blunt the negative effects of metals on the FCCU catalyst.

  • Slurry Fouling addresses the overall fouling problem to maintain heat transfer and circulation volume.

  • Visbreaker Fouling Control & Yield Improvement prevents fouling in heavy oil processing units but also increases yield output which significantly improves the profit profile for unit operation.

  • Exchanger & Furnace Fouling Control programs and monitoring ensure the right chemistry is applied at the right place and the program is effectively reducing fouling to maintain unit performance.

  • Reactor Bed Fouling programs break up that skin without shutting down the unit and allow the operation to continue far after the unit would have to shut down without treatment.

Ancillary Units

Efficient & reliable operation applies not only to the major process units-all aspects of refinery operations require good performance. Veolia reaches far into the refinery operations to help with many ancillary unit operations, including:

  • Amine Units with the ability to improve operating reliability, prevent process issues, or even turnkey design and build for an amine system, Veolia is positioned to help maximize return on a refinery's gas and liquid sweetening systems.

  • Sour/Process Water Strippers treatment and monitoring programs can help restore operating performance, ensure reliability, and provide consistent water quality to downstream consumers.

  • Equipment Cleaning designed to help degrease, decontaminate, and descale refinery equipment before or during maintenance activities.

Utility Systems

The efficient and effective use of water is key to a successful refinery operation. Veolia is an industry leader in treating industrial tough-to-treat water systems, ensuring refiners have the water and steam needed, where and when they need it to reduce water and energy consumption, eliminate downtime, extend equipment life, and protect the environment.

Fuel Performance Additives

Fuel additives improve the handling and use of characteristics of liquid hydrocarbon fuels. Fuel additives are designed to help refiners meet fuel specifications and ensure that treated fuels are suitable for handling in the fuel storage tank and pipelines and fit for use in end-user vehicles and equipment. Each year refiners spend millions of dollars on finished fuel additives to help meet finished fuel quality specifications. Most traditional finished fuel additive applications are inefficient and result in unnecessary costs. Veolia's fuel additives, in combination with on-site monitoring, chemical analysis, and recommendations from Veolia's testing laboratories, are designed to help refiners meet finished product specifications at minimum costs.

  • Cold Flow Improvers allow fuels to meet distillate flow specifications, but they also increase flexibility to maximize the most profitable product volumes, such as using chemistry to allow more gasoil blended into diesel fuel or reducing the need to blend additional jet fuel into diesel fuel to meet cold flow properties.

  • Corrosion Protection Programs protect carbon steel, copper, and silver in the storage, transport, and motor fuel systems from corrosion-related issues.

  • Lubricity Improvers restore the lubricity lost as sulfur specifications are reduced.

  • Conductivity Improvers ensure static buildup does not cause issues during transport and storage of fuels.

  • Fuel Stabilizers prevent the formation of gums that foul storage tanks and clog fuel systems and engines.

  • Tank Biocides help to avoid biological growth, contamination, and microbial-induced corrosion with an effective biocide program.

Wastewater Treatment

The refinery wastewater unit often sees the most incoming stream variability but still requires consistent, high-quality output to maintain proper effluent water quality. Wastewater treatment demands as much attention and need for integrated solutions as the other process units in your operation. Veolia considers your entire wastewater operation from primary treatment to discharge to develop solutions to reliably meet governmental regulations, provide the lowest cost of operation, and maintain a strong corporate citizen image to your neighbors.

Veolia is in a unique position to offer a comprehensive solution for wastewater treatment. We provide chemistry, equipment, unique monitoring technologies, and operational experience to refinery waste treatment plants—including the option for Veolia to own and operate your waste treatment units.

  • Primary Treatment  This first critical part of the treatment train can have many parallel objectives. Whether you are looking for more effective chemical programs to separate oil and solids from incoming wastewater; minimize sludge generation; looking to evaluate, upgrade, or install new separations equipment (primary oil-water separators (API) or secondary oil-water separators (DAF/DNF/DGF) or flotation units); or could benefit from a system assessment and performance improvement plan, Veolia can help with an integrated approach to managing this area of the treatment train to minimize operating costs, maximize oil recovery and protect the downstream biological process.

  • Secondary Treatment: Utilizing living organisms, this stage of the treatment train is the most sensitive part and requires a deep understanding of the specific biological processes being used in your system. Traditional biological treatment systems are prone to upsets in refineries due to the nature of the wastewater produced. Increased unconventional crude oil processing adds to these stressors in wastewater treatment. Cost-effective and reliable operation requires a range of monitoring and optimization tools, as well as operational experience. With a unique approach to monitoring biological system activity and stress, Veolia can measure the current performance capacity of a secondary treatment system. Early detection of biological stress allows operations to make changes proactively and cost-effectively.
